Short Learning Programme in Intellectual Property Law
The programme in Intellectual Property Law is presented from 21-22 of October 2016.
The course will be headed by Prof. W Alberts of the University of Johannesburg with three additional lecturers, one of whom currently practices as an advocate at the Johannesburg Bar Council as well as a patent attorney.
The purpose of this course is not only to hone the skills of legal practitioners in the field of IP law but also to accommodate those legal and other professionals who are active in diverse sectors of both the legal profession and world of commerce. The latter may want to enhance their career prospects by delving either partially or fully into the ever expanding field of lucrative IP law.
This course will, given the calibre of the presenters, certainly equip the successful participant to realize their career endeavours by analysing and explaining the diverse sectors of legislation coupled to the underlying common law principles which regulate IP law. Aspects relating to the tumultuous changes in Cyber technology and the ramifications thereof in IP law will be covered thus benefiting seasoned legal practitioners as well as practitioners intending to either diversify their portfolios or intending to embark on a career change.
The SLP in Intellectual Property Law will be presented over a two day work shop held in late October 2016 and will cover inter alia the following:
- Unlawful Competition
- Registration of Trade Marks
- Infringement of Trade Marks
- Subsistence of Copyright
- Infringement of Copyright
- Registration of Patents and Infringement of Patents
- Registration of Designs
- Infringement of Designs
- IP Law and the Internet
ADMISSION
Admission to the course, which is pitched at an NQF level 8, is an LLB degree or equivalent qualification on NQF level 7.
PRESCRIBED MATERIAL
The programme fee includes all prescribed material.
ASSESSMENT
The assessment will take the form of a single examination which will be written as advised.

PROGRAMME FORMAT AND DURATION
The programme in Intellectual Property Law is presented from 21-22 of October 2016. Contact tuition is compressed into a two-day programme from 08:30-16:00 at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus of the University of Johannesburg.
NB: Attendance of the two day
workshop is compulsory.
